NC State University Casey Aquatic Center
Raleigh, North Carolina
NC State’s Casey Aquatic Center houses the 25 meter competition pool and the 50 meter recreational pool for the campus. The aquatic center is opened year round, with the occasional closing for maintenance.
The natatorium underwent a lighting upgrade to replace the inefficient, existing lights with energy efficient and low maintenance LED fixtures. These LED lights helped with the energy efficiency, are comparatively long-lasting to the existing lights and reduce the light levels in the room.
The primary challenge with lighting design in a natatorium is minimizing glare. The Casey Aquatic Center’s waffle ceiling makes indirect lighting a challenge. Light fixtures directly above the water also prove to be a challenge and can be difficult to access. Therefore, the new lighting plan limited the number of fixtures over the water.
New lighting circuits, relay panels, panel boards and controls were installed. The project reduced the wattage and doubled the light levels in order to meet the current IES and NCAA recommended lighting levels.
Project Cost: $400,000.
